ST. LOUIS (BP) – Messengers to the 2016 Southern Baptist Convention, in addition to repudiating the display of the Confederate battle flag, approved 11 other resolutions on a variety of culture and ministry concerns. For Stephen Rummage, chairman of the Resolutions Committee, a resolution calling Southern Baptists to evangelize was central to the 10-member panel’s deliberations in presenting the 12 measures to the messengers. The resolution on evangelism “might just seem like a standard … [Read more...]
Abortion, trafficking, pro-life endorsements
June 27 was another sad day in America for women and the unborn. That was the day the U.S. Supreme Court struck down provisions of a Texas law requiring abortion clinics to meet the same standards as ambulatory surgical centers and requiring abortionists to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital in case of medical emergencies. This disastrous ruling will mean the unnecessary deaths of babies and leave mothers exposed to serious health risks. The ruling is bad news for Missouri, … [Read more...]
Born This Way? MBTS prof critiques the science of homosexuality
KANSAS CITY – Discussions of homosexuality in the public square often hit a brick wall when those in the pro-camp dismiss Christians who point to the Bible’s teachings, and those Christians in turn dismiss the scientific “proof” that homosexuals and transgendered people are simply “born this way.” Sexuality and identity is as innate and predetermined as skin color, so the thinking goes. Midwestern Theological Seminary ethicist Alan Branch attempts to knock down that wall with his new book, … [Read more...]
Court strikes down abortion provider regulations
WASHINGTON (BP) – The U.S. Supreme Court struck down Monday (June 27) a state legislature's effort to hold abortion providers responsible for the protection of women who use their services. In a 5-3 opinion, the high court ruled portions of a Texas law that regulate abortion doctors and clinics constitute an "undue burden" on a woman's right to abort her child and are therefore unconstitutional. The high court's reversal of the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans invalidated a … [Read more...]
SBC repudiates display of Confederate flag
ST. LOUIS (BP) – Messengers to the 2016 Southern Baptist Convention renounced display of the Confederate battle flag in a historic, overwhelming vote June 14. The convention adopted late in its afternoon session a resolution that urged "brothers and sisters in Christ to discontinue the display of the Confederate battle flag as a sign of solidarity of the whole body of Christ, including our African American brothers and sisters." The resolution was one of seven adopted by messengers, … [Read more...]
Missouri appeals court considers the rights of frozen human embryos
By Kiley Crossland (WNS) – Another divorced couple went to court last week to fight over the remains of their shattered marriage, but their disagreement involves more than the typical tug-of-war over furniture and houses. The Missouri Court of Appeals must determine whether the couple’s frozen embryos are property or human beings with rights. A lower court declared the embryos the couple’s joint property, and ruled both the mother and father must agree to any action involving them. … [Read more...]
Albert Mohler: Unconditional surrender demanded
Now that the moral revolutionaries are solidly in control, what is to be demanded of Christians who, on the basis of Christian conviction, cannot join the revolution? The demands have now been presented, and they represent unconditional surrender. The latest terms of surrender were delivered by Mark Tushnet, William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Law at Harvard Law School. In a stunningly candid essay, Tushnet declared a total liberal victory and chastised his fellow liberals for what he … [Read more...]
Obama ‘potty policy’ should be ‘flushed’
Michael Whitehead/contributing writer WASHINGTON – On May 13, the Obama administration directed public schools (K-12) and colleges to permit transgender students to use restrooms and locker rooms corresponding to their gender identity instead of their biological sex. It did so in a “Dear Colleague” letter from the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Education Department (ED), warning that failure of a school district or college to comply might result in loss of federal funding. … [Read more...]
Light in a confused world
“Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.” Psalm 119:105 Few would dispute the fact that our world is becoming more confusing. Young children may question, “Am I a boy/girl, or am I a boy/girl who looks like a boy/girl?” While shopping, where do I go to us the bathroom when there may be new choices? What are the Ten Commandments? Do those Ten Commandments just apply sometimes, or are they no longer applicable at all? Is our country’s Constitution outdated? Who has the … [Read more...]
Mitchell talks on life, death
HANNIBAL – Especially in this high-tech society, families are often faced with serious questions about the beginning of life and about dying—questions that C. Ben Mitchell, Graves Professor of Moral Philosophy at Union University, addressed during two presentations at the Missouri Baptist Convention’s Worldview Conference, April 14. Churches are all-too-often unprepared for one beginning-of-life issue facing families in their own congregation: namely, infertility. “Infertility is like any … [Read more...]
Study: Healthy babies can still be born after abnormal tests
CAMBRIDGE, England (WNS) – New research suggests women who terminate their pregnancies because of an abnormal prenatal test may be aborting perfectly healthy babies. Doctors frequently offer birth defect tests to pregnant women whose babies are at increased risk of abnormalities. One of the tests that can be performed earliest in pregnancy, chorionic villus sampling (CVS) analyzes cells from the placenta between 11 and 14 weeks of gestation. Physicians often believe the presence of … [Read more...]
Videos seized from pro-life leader’s apartment
ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. (BP) – Center for Medical Progress director David Daleiden revealed on April 5 that agents from the California attorney general’s office searched his Orange County apartment, seizing “all video footage” related to CMP’s investigation into Planned Parenthood’s involvement in the fetal tissue trade. Reporting the raid on CMP’s Facebook page, Daleiden characterized the search and seizure of the videos as an “attack on citizen journalism.” He blamed the decision for the … [Read more...]
