The guide led our small group all the way to the top of the Albrechtsburg Castle wall. We looked out over the panoramic landscape at the incredible beauty of the Elbe River valley in southern Germany, an area that once was in East Germany. We were precisely in Meissen, the home of some of the world’s finest porcelain ware. The work of the artisans is extraordinary. While we stood looking over the wall, one of my fellow tour members asked the question, “What was it like to live under … [Read more...]

ST. LOUIS (BP) – Messengers to the 2016 Southern Baptist Convention renounced display of the Confederate battle flag in a historic, overwhelming vote June 14. ST. LOUIS (BP) – Russell Moore offered a ringing defense of religious freedom for all, including Muslims, during the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission's report Wednesday (June 15) to the 2016 Southern Baptist Convention. When questioned by a messenger how a Southern Baptist could defend the right of Muslims to build mosques, the ERLC's president said it was not a difficult decision. "What it means to be a Baptist is to support soul freedom for everybody," Moore … [Read more...]
Albert Mohler: Unconditional surrender demanded
Now that the moral revolutionaries are solidly in control, what is to be demanded of Christians who, on the basis of Christian conviction, cannot join the revolution? The demands have now been presented, and they represent unconditional surrender. The latest terms of surrender were delivered by Mark Tushnet, William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Law at Harvard Law School. In a stunningly candid essay, Tushnet declared a total liberal victory and chastised his fellow liberals for what he … [Read more...]

TEHRAN, Iran (BP) – A female Christian convert who worked with Saeed Abedini planting house churches years ago in Iran is on a hunger strike and near death in the harsh Evin prison in Tehran, Iran, the freed pastor told Baptist Press. Nasim Naghash Zargaran, also known as Maryam, was one of the first persons who converted to Christianity under Abedini's counsel [16 years ago], he told BP, and shortly after Abedini's 2012 imprisonment was arrested because of her vigilant evangelism. … [Read more...]
Obama ‘potty policy’ should be ‘flushed’
Michael Whitehead/contributing writer WASHINGTON – On May 13, the Obama administration directed public schools (K-12) and colleges to permit transgender students to use restrooms and locker rooms corresponding to their gender identity instead of their biological sex. It did so in a “Dear Colleague” letter from the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Education Department (ED), warning that failure of a school district or college to comply might result in loss of federal funding. … [Read more...]
Missouri Baptist University’s Title IX exemption at risk
ST. LOUIS – Missouri Baptist University’s application for exemption from Title IX has been questioned by the U.S. Department of Education because of the actions it took in 2001 to separate from the Missouri Baptist Convention. Religious schools and colleges may request an exemption from Title IX if they hold sincere religious convictions about sex or gender and if the school is owned and controlled by a church or religious denomination. In a January 4, 2016, letter from the Department’s … [Read more...]
Religious liberty was tossed like a toy
On a Tuesday afternoon in April, I shared with the crowd that was gathered in the state capitol rotunda that we were there to talk about religious liberty in the context of a culture that seems to be struggling with principle vs. political power brokering. The great principle of religious liberty was tossed around like a toy doll between competing agendas. You would think that the protections passed by the Senate were common-sense “no brainers” that removed government from a potentially … [Read more...]
Transgender student wins restroom case appeal
RICHMOND, Va. (BP) – A federal appellate court has “for the first time ever” held that a public high school may not provide separate restrooms and locker rooms for students on the basis of biological sex alone, according to dissenting judge’s opinion. The fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Va., threw out a lower court’s dismissal of a lawsuit by a transgender student claiming the Gloucester County, Va., school board discriminated against her by not allowing her to use the … [Read more...]
‘Ministry in the New Marriage Culture’
We live in a culture that is increasingly hostile to what the Bible teaches us about sexuality, gender, and marriage. Christians seeking to live out their faith beyond their homes and churches have faced resistance, criticism, accusations of discrimination, and in some cases legal action. Religious liberty bills designed to safeguard the freedom of those who seek to live out a biblical ethic have recently been signed into law in both North Carolina and Mississippi, and they have met with … [Read more...]
Ill. inn owners ordered to host same-sex wedding
PAXTON, Ill. (BP) – An Illinois judge has given the owners of a bed and breakfast one year to provide their facility to a gay couple “for an event celebrating their civil union.” The order, part of a decision handed down March 22, also includes an $80,000 fine. In September, Illinois Human Rights Commission Judge Michael Robinson declared Jim and Beth Walder, owners of Timber Creek Bed and Breakfast near Paxton, Ill., in violation of the state’s Human Rights Act, which bans discrimination … [Read more...]
Religious liberty focus of new study
NASHVILLE (BP) – A growing number of Americans believe religious liberty is on the decline and that the nation's Christians face growing intolerance, according to a survey by LifeWay Research. Those surveyed also noted American Christians complain too much. Those are among the findings of a new study of views about religious liberty from LifeWay Research. Researchers surveyed 1,000 Americans in September 2013 and September 2015 and then compared the results. Two-thirds (63 percent) … [Read more...]
