Missouri has become one of the nation’s strongest defenders of the unborn, and that reputation will be enhanced if the General Assembly passes the “Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.” The bill will soon be debated in the House of Representatives. It will prevent abortions on preborn babies over 20 weeks gestation, when science and medical practice confirm that preborn babies can feel pain. We join Missouri Right to Life and other pro-life organizations in urging its passage. It would … [Read more...]
‘I lift up my eyes to the hills’
I lift up my eyes to the hills— where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. Psalm 121: 1-2 Mountain-top experiences. We’ve probably all had them in our faith. Did you ever think that maybe a mountain is not a great place to be? As a Kentuckian, by birth, and growing up in the foothills of the Appalachia, I always found the small mountains surrounding my hometown to be comforting and pleasant to look at. In fact, the command “take to the … [Read more...]
REVIEW: ‘I Can Only Imagine’ shatters expectations
I Can Only Imagine, which opened March 16th, will shatter expectations of inferior Christian filmmaking and may be considered the new standard for Christian movies. The film, based on the true story behind MercyMe’s double platinum hit, features solid cinematography, a talented cast, and a story filled with humor, romance, and redemption. The movie follows the life of Bart Millard (J. Michael Finley), the lead singer of MercyMe. Full disclosure: J. Michael Finley is a friend from high … [Read more...]
Conversion without discipleship?
Hull, Bill. Conversion and Discipleship: You Can’t Have One Without the Other. Grand Rapids: Zondervan. 250 pp. $18.99. Can we be Christians without living for Jesus? Is getting saved something different from being a disciple? Is discipleship a choice for the Christian, or a necessary part of being a Christian? As Christians we often use those terms, “Christian” and “disciple,” as if they meant different things. A Christian is something you are, a status or a belief that you hold, … [Read more...]
Sight & Sounds’s ‘Samson’ lives up to hype
BRANSON – As much as I love “Les Miserables” and “Phantom of the Opera,” those stage musicals do not have llamas or camels. Advantage: Sight & Sound Theatre’s ‘Samson.’ If you’ve been to a Sight & Sound production, you can go ahead and stop reading now. You already know the quality, thought and skill they put into the productions, so just save yourself a few minutes; go ahead and book your tickets for “Samson” and start planning that road trip down Highway 65. I had never been to … [Read more...]
Superabundantly more
Oh that moment. That moment of extreme delight when the waiter brings out a spectacular tray covered with every dream dessert. Be still, my heart. Of course, for me, right after that moment of delight comes the next moment of complete despair when I realize the guy expects me to only take one. Maybe that’s one of the reasons I love cake pops. They’re tiny. So that means you can eat a whole tray of them. I also love cake pops because: Cake. On a stick. … And apparently I now think even … [Read more...]
The oneness of God
This is the second in a series of articles contrasting Allah and Yahweh: Muslims and Christians agree that God is one but understand oneness differently. The Islamic doctrine of tawhid, or absolute oneness, is more than strict monotheism. Tawhid celebrates Allah as singular, indivisible, and monolithic. Muslims insist that Allah has no “partners.” To say that Jesus is the Son of God, or that God exists as a Trinity, is to commit the unpardonable sin of shirk. But the Qur’an does not … [Read more...]
Considering the tax code and charitable giving
You more than likely have heard at least something of the recent Tax Code changes. While there was much in the media about the potential changes, the final bill was not as dramatic as some predicted. However, it does not mean there were not some significant changes that could affect you and may warrant a conversation with your tax professional. Some of these changes include some adjustments to the tax brackets, repeal of the Affordable Care Act’s individual mandate in 2019, a cap on … [Read more...]
The 20/80 rule lives on
During my February trek to Nashville for the SBC Executive Committee meeting, I’m always blessed by the reports from the entity leaders of the SBC. It is thrilling to hear about the advance of the gospel in North America and among the unreached in neglected places of the world. Baptist Press reported an interesting stat. The president of the Executive Committee, Dr. Frank Page, said in his address that “less than 2,000 churches in our convention give 50 percent of all Cooperative Program … [Read more...]
Royals fight porn, 2nd Springfield lands interim, other notes
Kansas City Royals General Manager Dayton Moore has been featured in The Pathway several times highlighting his faith in Christ. Now Moore is taking the fight to pornography by offering classes to the team’s players, coaches and staff, warning them of porn’s destructive nature. The Royals recently took timeout from their spring training schedule in Surprise, Ariz., to attend a seminar led by Fight the New Drug, a non-profit organization that warns about pornography’s harmful … [Read more...]
Power struggles stir trouble
“Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; ….does not seek its own, is not provoked,” I Corinthians 13:4,5 One need only listen to the news for a short time to find many examples of power struggles in Washington, D.C. Not only do we see them in Washington, we also see them in churches, schools, places of employment, and, yes, even our homes! What causes power struggles? What is the result of those struggles and what can we do to prevent them? Power struggles occur when we … [Read more...]
In step – two, three, four – with Jesus
I’m not one to dance like nobody’s watching. Mostly because I don’t want to watch it either. But I do sing loud. And big. Sometimes with motions. So while I might not necessarily dance like no one is watching, I have been known to sing like I’m vacuuming. A couple of months ago, I did accidentally bust a few new moves, but it was because a bug flew into my hair. That was some sweet choreography. Embarrassing, sure. I didn’t even know I had those moves. A couple of my kids saw it, as a … [Read more...]
