Sometimes I like to use words I don’t altogether understand. It’s so I can sound smarter. And perspicacious, sagacious, and astutaquacious. Yes, I did make up that last one—hoping it would make me sound even astutaquaciouser. I admit, it does get embarrassing when I mispronounce a word I made up. You know what really frustrates me though, linguistically speaking? People getting fuss-strated instead of frustrated. Equally frus-fuss-strating, the word “acai.” Ironically, I’m not so much … [Read more...]

Love one another deeply
Soon, specialists will help military veterans cope with post-traumatic stress disorder at our renovated Baptist Home in Smithville – and even plant a church on campus that ministers to those who have faithfully served our country. Meanwhile, at this very moment, the Missouri Baptist Children’s Home is helping “Lisa,” a 13-year-old, overcome the trauma of human trafficking through the ministry of Freedom 43:19. And more than 100 college students are serving in Missouri Baptist churches as … [Read more...]
SBC’s EC: ‘Crickets’ on hiring pro-LGBTQ firms
For those familiar with a rural lifestyle, the night time sound of crickets scraping two textured body parts together can be a soothing respite from the clamor of a busy day. The insects develop quickly when warm weather arrives and adults appear and begin “singing” and mating in late spring, continuing until June or early July when they finish laying eggs or die off. “Crickets” has also become a term to describe peoples’ silence, usually when caught unexpectedly, following a grievous … [Read more...]
Adopted children have questions
But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. – Galatians 4:4-5 (NKJV) When my husband and I were dating many years ago, we often helped some missionary friends who had a children’s home for American Indian children. These children had come from homes where there had been problems with alcohol, etc. We often said that we thought it would be best … [Read more...]
What is Christlike care at the Baptist Homes?
Baptist Homes & Healthcare Ministries is committed to creating a culture where the sanctity of life, Christlike compassionate care, and faithful stewardship result in a ministry that pleases God. This month I have asked David Sundeen, Vice President for Organizational Culture and Care, to share how BHHM is setting the standard of care for the aging. What is Christlike care? At Baptist Homes and Healthcare Ministries, Christlike compassionate care is the guiding principle for all we … [Read more...]
Are Southern Baptists Ready for a World That Despises Christians?
EDITOR’S NOTE: This article was first published on The Stream at https://stream.org/are-southern-baptists-ready-for-a-world-that-despises-christians/. Aaron Renn’s penetrating analysis of American evangelicalism in his First Things article triggered much thought. As a respected writer and thinker, Renn uses the framework of three worlds (positive, neutral, negative) with evangelicals swimming against a relentless secular rip current. Evangelicals are not only losing standing in the … [Read more...]
What does the Bible say about abortion?
When the Supreme Court recently reversed Roe v. Wade, the issue of abortion exploded into the national consciousness. Now, more than ever, Christians must be clear that abortion is a moral question rather than a political one. As a moral issue, we must confidently know how Scripture addresses it. As Christians, our authority on abortion comes from the Word of God. God is not silent on the value of life, and we need to know what He says about it. Scripture offers three general principles to … [Read more...]
Keeping an eye on our focus
Lash down. I repeat, we have a lash down. This is not a drill. Go to DEFCON 2. I was at a conference, just stepping up to the mic. Two seconds in, and wouldn’t you know it, one fake lash goes down. All weekend long, those lashes had been working perfectly. But up to the mic and…flop. It didn’t flop into my eye; at least there was that. But it flopped over it. So it was like looking through little prison bars. Lash-jail. I had to laugh. We all did. Turns out my eyelashes stole the show. … [Read more...]
Is it too late?
When death shows up, knocking on your life’s door, and you have not surrendered your life to Christ, it’s too late. When the door closes on the airplane while you are running toward your gate, it’s too late and you missed your connection. When your favorite baseball pitcher releases the ball, it’s too late to retrieve the pitch for a do-over. When a student and parents visit college campuses and your student attends classes where an anti-biblical perspective is espoused or demanded, and … [Read more...]
The future of public policy, state conventions
Some of the harshest criticism I have received during my 20-plus years as the founding editor of this news journal have occurred while addressing issues involving public policy. I understand our purpose for existing as a state convention is to make Christ known and for Him to become Lord and Savior for every sinner who believes. But we are to do more. As believers we are called to grow in the faith once for all delivered unto the saints. It is through our growth in Christ that we come to … [Read more...]
Dad needs mom’s support
“Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them. – Colossians 3:18,19 When my husband and I were first married, I told him that I did not want to be in first place in his life. What I preferred was to have him always put God in first place, then I would know that I would always be in second place. God plans everything perfectly, if we would only follow His ways! Many would argue that women should not have to … [Read more...]
Count it all, Joy
I work with accountants. I like accountants; God likes accountants; you should like accountants. They are full of tenacity, many of whom are the finest examples of Christian kindness you will ever find. However, accountants will require you to “code” every transaction. Expenses must be “charged back” or correctly identified based on the transaction’s already determined exact account number. Getting close does not count; for instance, writing account number 482628402974 is not the same as … [Read more...]
