WASHINGTON, D.C. – An Air Force sergeant who filed a discrimination complaint with the U.S. military claiming he was fired by his lesbian commander for refusing to make a statement of support for same-sex “marriage” may now face prosecution for taking his accusations public. Senior Master Sergeant Phillip Monk was relieved of his duties as first sergeant at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio in August after two separate confrontations with an openly homosexual superior officer, Major … [Read more...]
Focus on smaller churches with mb125
Dan Steinbeck/contributing writer BRANSON – Pastors and their families ministering to the large number of rural and smaller churches across the state were the focus of the Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC)-sponsored mb125 Conference held here June 18-20. Pastors got reduced registration costs, which covered the motel and most meals, free time with family, books, and door prizes. Why the effort? “That’s the majority of who we (MBC-affiliated churches) are. Some pastors benefit from … [Read more...]
The resources are in the harvest of souls
Across Missouri I have had a consistent message: Help new believers go down on one knee to pray to receive Christ as Savior and immediately go down on the other knee to pray for who they should go together to share their faith. We have around 10,000 to 11,000 baptisms every year. Are we intentional about making these new believers make disciples of others that they know? “It’s the responsibility of every church to make disciples. I also believe that the Word tells us that it is the job of … [Read more...]
Pro-life pastor, lawmaker stands strong
JEFFERSON CITY – Rep. John McCaherty, R-Murphy and pastor of First Baptist Church, Murphy, and 41 other members of the Missouri House of Representatives believe that a mother should not be coerced into having an abortion simply because she wants a child of the opposite sex. They have joined together to sponsor House Bill 386 (HB 386) which would also protect unborn babies who have been diagnosed with possible physical or mental disabilities. “We are trying to stop the sales process,” … [Read more...]
HINKLE: Welcome new readers to The Pathway’s 2nd decade
Ten years ago this month the first print edition of The Pathway rolled off the presses for a few thousand paid subscribers. They were mostly pastors and leaders within the conservative movement known as Project 1000 that saved the Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC) from theological liberalism and created The Pathway. God has blessed The Pathway ministry because of the prayers of Missouri Southern Baptists and its faithfulness to His Word. The Pathway’s founding verse, Jeremiah 6:16 (“Stand … [Read more...]
Missourians open their hearts, zoom past MMO goal
Missouri Baptists dug deep and gave generously in 2012 to the Rheubin L. South Missouri Missions Offering. As a result, they surpassed the MMO goal for the first time since 2000. Receipts for 2012, which are disbursed in 2013, totaled $691,722, exceeding the goal of $675,000. “Thank you, Missouri Baptists,” said John Yeats, executive director of the Missouri Baptist Convention. “Your faithfulness in stewardship and your sacrificial giving impacts lives for Christ throughout our … [Read more...]
YEATS: Ziglar-isms from a man who lived out his faith
On Nov. 28, a very special man went home to be with his Lord. I call him veryspecial because his wit and passion have indelibly made their mark on the canvases of our lives. Zig Ziglar, “America’s Motivator,” was a unique Christian man who was one of the most popular speakers in business circles until declining health caused him to stay closer to home. Some of his quotables or Ziglar-isms worth repeating are: • If you treat your wife like a thoroughbred, you’ll never end up with a nag. • … [Read more...]
From suicidal to God’s grace
KAHOKA — Rob Quillin presents a stocky, no-nonsense image as he meets people here at First Baptist Church. A former hardball Kansas City police officer from the inner city, he is now a pastor of a Southern Baptist church in northeast Missouri. His journey is one of God’s protection and grace. Growing up in the city, he admired cops. Once when some gang members jumped him on the way home from school, he was getting a beating until he saw the blue lights of a Kansas City police car. “The … [Read more...]
Wentzville plant catches trend of multiplication
WENTZVILLE — It started as a vision and a desire to build a community of believers in his new hometown of Wentzville. Now, four years later, Pastor Jason Zellmer, or “Jay Z,” as his congregation affectionately calls him, has witnessed Peine Ridge Church grow from 19 people meeting in his house to as many as 290 on a given Sunday. “It’s by God’s grace that we’ve seen that many people come through our doors, but that’s not the measure of success we use,” Zellmer said. “That’s not the … [Read more...]
Disaster Relief needs college student volunteers
JEFFERSON CITY – The first of four opportunities this year to become a trained disaster relief (DR) volunteer is fast approaching. Hannibal-LaGrange University will host the training Jan. 25-26 on campus. Missouri Baptists have responded to fires in Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma and New Jersey, New York, Mississippi and Louisiana for debris removal, feeding and mud-out in the last six months. There are more than 4,000 trained DR volunteers in the state, but when disaster strikes and … [Read more...]
Paul and James in Thunderdome
I like to watch certain films again and again no matter how many times I have seen them. My list of honey-please-back-away-from-the-remote movies includes “Gladiator,” “Saving Private Ryan,” “The Outlaw Josie Wales,” and just about any 007 film. Oh, and don’t forget the Mad Max trilogy starring Mel Gibson. One of my favorite scenes in the third film features Max squaring off against a brutal, masked bodyguard named Blaster in Thunderdome, a caged orb in which the only rule is: “Two men … [Read more...]
MBTS, Missouri Baptists: Strengthening a friendship
Southern Baptists are similar folks. Wherever you find Southern Baptists – regardless of the location – you tend to find people who love Jesus, the Bible, the local church and fellowshipping with one another. Whether in Argentina or Alabama, Mumbai or Missouri, this rings true. I have been especially struck by this commonality among Southern Baptists since my election as president of Midwestern Seminary. In recent weeks I have enjoyed interacting with Missouri Baptists all across this … [Read more...]
