HANNIBAL – Days before Hannibal-LaGrange University (HLGU) opened for new students and fall semester classes, a nasty windstorm and accompanying rain damaged the campus. The main damage from the late afternoon storm, Aug. 12, was to the student center in the middle of the campus, where a large section of the roof was stripped off and thrown to the ground. However, other buildings had water infiltration, and some students were evacuated from one housing unit for a time. In addition, … [Read more...]
Churches’ partnership after fire paints picture of Christian unity
LOUISIANA, Mo. – There’s a beautiful picture being painted here. The canvas is the body of Christ in two churches – one whose building is temporarily out of service and one reaching out to the other. The brush is the movement of the Holy Spirit. The picture is titled, “Christian Unity.” As dark colors can accent a picture, so the dark times, like a church fire, can highlight God’s work. In September, 2020, lightning struck the New Jerusalem Tabernacle, a non-denominational black church in … [Read more...]
Trees, branches cleared after windstorm in Perry
PERRY – Wide-spread damage of trees and branches was reported in northeast Missouri after strong winds, up to 90 miles per hour hit the area. Al Groner, Northeast Regional Coordinator for Missouri Baptist Disaster Relief, said the Mark Twain Lake area, Monroe City, and Center all had some damage. However, none of them had damage to the degree of Perry, and only Perry needed Disaster Relief assistance. Many streets were clogged with downed limbs and some property was damaged. There were … [Read more...]
Churches set for Vacation Bible School
JEFFERSON CITY – There is good news in Missouri churches this summer. Vacation Bible School is on! The COVID-19 pandemic forced a number of churches to cancel Bible school in 2020. That doesn’t seem to be the case this year. The Pathway did a spot check of various churches across the state to see their plans for VBS. Some churches, First Baptist in St. Peters and Southern Baptist Fellowship in Wayland, are using Lifeway’s “Concrete and Cranes” material purchased last year. Southern … [Read more...]
Star Hope Baptist Church continues longtime focus on missions
ELSBERRY – Long before Star Hope Baptist called a career missionary as their pastor, missions was an important part of their ministry. Roger Briggs and wife Jeanette served as missionaries in Belgium for nine years, and then seven years after the Western and Eastern parts of Europe were divided by the International Mission Board, he was Associate Director of Europe and Eastern Europe under Dr. John Floyd. Seven years ago, he was called as Star Hope pastor. “Sixty is a big attendance for … [Read more...]
Center Grove food ministry grows amid pandemic
MOODY – For 30-plus years, Larry and Debbie Hopkins have ministered to the small community through Center Grove Baptist Church. The ministry now includes a food distribution program started in the pandemic and growing since then. “I don’t know how many pounds of food we’ve given out,” Hopkins, the pastor said. Suffice it to say it has been a lot of food. So much so, Hopkins and deacon Jason Cullum built a structure to house the food for the program that began in August, and since December … [Read more...]
Ninety volunteers trained, re-certified at DR event
HANNIBAL – Two new segments of Disaster Relief training were introduced March 5-6 at Calvary Baptist Church. State Disaster Relief Director Gaylon Moss said the current assessment part of the ministry is being worked into a stand-alone ministry. This means that trained assessors could be first in to a disaster area without having to attach to a crew. Moss also introduced Richard Nations, the Thousands Hills Director of Missions and Pathway writer who will serve as public information … [Read more...]
Pandemic leads church to seek building
GLADSTONE – There is irony in a church building under renovation and a King James reference to God’s people. The Grove Church is remodeling a former International Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) lodge for a place of worship. Several New Testament KJV passages call believers “peculiar people.” To the world, Christians may seem ‘odd,’ but to believers of churches like the Grove, it’s about aligning with Jesus Christ, not the world. The Grove is still in some ways a church plant, starting five … [Read more...]
Church revitalized, sees growth amid pandemic
HIGH RIDGE – When Reggan Jett came from West Virginia in May, 2019, to pastor in Missouri, he knew Fellowship Baptist Church needed work. Since then, God has obviously done a work. “It’s been crazy. I don’t know how to explain it other than God (is at work),” Pastor Jett said. Fellowship saw 19 families join during the pandemic in 2020; church attendance has more than doubled; and church facilities have had renovation. “My first contact with Fellowship was in December 2018 on a visit. I … [Read more...]
Satterwhite’s life proves dire medical prognosis wrong
KAHOKA – Amber Satterwhite was doing well as a teenager, despite being – as her parents said – a“brittle diabetic.” “She was editor of her yearbook, a straight A student. She had managed her diabetes since age 5 and gave herself shots. She was having a very successful life as a teenager,” her father Ron Satterwhite said. Ron is the Mt. Salem/Wyaconda Southern Baptist Association Director of Missons. “She had 200 kids at her 14th birthday party, played percussion and cello, and won some … [Read more...]
Disaster Relief team supplies woman with winter firewood
EWING – One Disaster Relief team didn’t wait for a crisis to meet a need. Eight members of the Mt. Salem/Wyaconda Southern Baptist Association spent Saturday morning, Jan. 16, cutting a fallen tree, splitting logs, and removing them from a rural cow pasture to supply firewood for a needy woman. The eight represented four of the 19 churches of the association. The four represented churches were Ewing First Baptist, Dover First Baptist, Alexandria Baptist, and Mt. Olivet Baptist. “We were … [Read more...]
FBC Sikeston presents ‘Quarantine Christmas’
SIKESTON – In this COVID-19 era, the annual Christmas show, to borrow the maxim, must go on. First Baptist Pastor Mathew Vroman said the church normally does a Christmas program, but the real and perceived threats of the coronavirus seemed to curtail it. “I told them I could write a play. I wanted to write something quality, funny and relevant. There are three audiences: those who are not saved, but know something of the Bible; those not saved who know nothing of the Bible or God, and the … [Read more...]
