SPRINGFIELD – Messengers at the 2018 Missouri Baptist Convention annual meeting called for purity and repentance by leaders, celebrated normative-sized churches, denounced pornagraphy as a public health crisis and more by adopting eight resolutions Oct. 23. (An additional resolution expressed thanks to Crossway Baptist Church and local hotels for their assistance with the annual meeting.) The MBC Committee on Resolutions – made up of three men and two women – submitted the slate of … [Read more...]
Zamperini tells background of ‘Unbroken’ at HLGU
HANNIBAL – Luke Zamperini, son of Olympic hero and World War II prisoner of war Louis Zamperini, and now an executive producer of the recent movie about his father’s path to Christ, held the audience’s attention in the palm of his hand here Nov. 7 at the Hannibal-LaGrange University Booster Banquet. The younger Zamperini discussed in detail his father’s remarkable and miraculous life. Louis was saved from a life of juvenile delinquency by sports, and made his way on to the 1936 U.S. … [Read more...]
Hurricane Michael: MBC Disaster Relief deploys to Florida
BRISTOL, Fla. – Teams of Missouri Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers returning home from giving help, hope and healing in North Carolina after Hurricane Florence barely had time to blink before the call came out again. This time, it was Hurricane Michael, which smashed Florida’s Panhandle Oct. 10. The storm took a direct shot to the Florida Panhandle near Mexico Beach and it was the third strongest in recorded United States history, the strongest to hit the Continental U.S. in 14 years and … [Read more...]
FBC Kimberling City ensures every child has warm, comfortable place to sleep
KIMBERLING CITY – Falling asleep in church is one thing, but it’s another entirely for a church to step up and make sure children in the community get a good night’s sleep. First Baptist Church here is doing just that with Sleep in Heavenly Peace, a program that provides bunk beds and linens to children aged 2 to 17 in the Branson area who otherwise would be sleeping on the floor. First Baptist’s chapter of the national organization hosts build days where different groups from the … [Read more...]
Major League’s umpire Marvin Hudson: ‘You never know who’s watching’
ST. LOUIS – Marvin Hudson’s goal is to never be the highlight of a game. But sharing his testimony at South County Baptist Church here before taking his place behind the plate at the Sept. 16 Cardinals-Dodgers game, Hudson, a Major League Baseball umpire, said he knows what it’s like to stand out for exactly the wrong reason. A former college catcher, Hudson worked his way up through the minor leagues as an umpire. Eventually, he was promoted to call games during Spring Training and in … [Read more...]
MBC Disaster Relief volunteers respond to Hurricane Florence
WALLACE, N.C. – It hasn’t necessarily dominated the national headlines, but the scope of Hurricane Florence’s impact on the east coast – North Carolina, in particular – has been massive. It may have been downgraded to a Category 1 storm, but the U.S. Geological Survey says the storm still dumped more than 18 trillion – yes, trillion with a T – gallons of water. Fortunately, the flooding rivers and creeks were also met with a flood of aid, including dozens of Missouri Baptist Disaster … [Read more...]
Saved then sent: MBC collegiate missionary sees lives changed in North Africa
NORTH AFRICA – At 20 years old, Noah Johnson is already a veteran of the Missouri Baptist Convention’s (MBC) summer missions program. Johnson has given up his summer to work as a missionary with the MBC for the past three years, and the program has been instrumental in his life. “The biggest thing that God has instilled in me,” Johnson said, “was just a mission mindset and a calling to live my life for Jesus and on mission for Him.” Johnson began to develop that mission mindset in his … [Read more...]

HANNIBAL – Missouri’s attorney general preached from Ephesians during the Oct. 3 chapel service at Hannibal-LaGrange University. Inspiring ‘Unbroken’ tells ‘rest of the story’
I’ll get this out of the way quickly: “Unbroken: Path to Redemption,” is a better-than-average movie. It’s worth your $10 to go see it. After being thoroughly depressed by another movie with “broken” in the title (still-in-theaters “God Bless the Broken Road”), I was prepared to sit through another 90 minutes of shoddy workmanship with a thin, Christian veneer tacked on as an afterthought. Just two or three minutes into Unbroken (I refuse to write out again that unnecessarily cumbersome … [Read more...]
From Missouri to Africa and back again, Wood-Bliven sees Cooperative Program’s genius
FESTUS – As a member of the Missouri Baptist Convention Executive Board, Stephanie Wood-Bliven gets to see and hear the value of Baptist cooperation. But the member of Faith Baptist, Festus didn’t need to be a part of the MBC board to know first-hand about the genius of the Cooperative Program; she’s lived it. The Cooperative Program is Southern Baptists’ unified plan of giving to missions. Cooperating Southern Baptist churches give a percentage of their undesignated receipts in support … [Read more...]
