NASHVILLE (BP) – Following a called meeting via extended conference calls on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 22-23), members of the SBC Executive Committee bylaws workgroup have released a statement responding to SBC President J.D. Greear's report earlier this week on sexual abuse. In his Feb. 18 report, Greer specifically named 10 churches included in recent news reports about sexual abuse cases involving Southern Baptist congregations. NAMB honors Parry for Disaster Relief work
KANSAS CITY – Tamara Parry thought she was there to honor someone else. In fact, she even had her phone out to capture the moment a Missouri Baptist Disaster Relief volunteer’s name was called. She didn’t even know she was nominated. “In the video you hear them say my name at least twice – maybe three times – before I realized it was my name,” Parry said. Out of more than 50,000 trained volunteers nationwide, Southern Baptist Disaster Relief leaders honored six with Distinguished Service … [Read more...]
‘Inherit the Wind’ monkeys with Scopes’ history
Movies can be a great tool for instruction, but they also have a tremendous ability to throw a monkey wrench into the complex workings of history and honest debate when drama is taken for reality. Such is the case with 1960’s “Inherit the Wind,” a story which is based on but bears only a passing resemblance to the famed “Scopes Monkey Trial.” (Click for further background of the trial and its legacy for the SBC.) In his book, Summer for the Gods: The Scopes Trial and America’s Continuing … [Read more...]
Karis shouts God’s grace, regardless of location – Congregations merge, swap buildings to advance Kingdom
COLUMBIA – The old cliché that a church is not a building holds true for Karis Church, a 13-year-old congregation here in the heart of Missouri. It’s a good thing, too. If that were the case, Karis would be suffering an extreme identity crisis. Instead, the church is celebrating its “new” permanent home in central Columbia – its sixth home in its short life as it continues to live out its mission to reach the community with the Gospel. Karis launched Easter 2006 in the Tiger Hotel … [Read more...]

JEFFERSON CITY – John Stroup held the attention of more than 400 elected officials, their staff and guests Jan. 9 as he challenged them to be obedient to God’s will during this year’s legislative session, even when it may not be convenient or easy. “God can use a homeless dope fiend like me,” Stroup said. “Just imagine what God can do with an elected official who is willing to step outside of his comfort zone and obey the call?” Stroup, president and co-founder of Freeway Ministries in … [Read more...]

What I learned spending 262 hours in movie theaters
It’s the time of making (and breaking) New Year’s Resolutions. While I’m optimistic I can keep up with my goals for 2019 – continue to lose weight, read more books and pick up a new hobby (I recently tried axe-throwing!) – I am proud to report that I accomplished my resolution for 2018: watch one movie per week. I know it’s a silly goal, but it was fun. And instead of making 52 trips to the cineplex, I ended up buying tickets 119 times. That’s not a typo. I saw 119 movies on the big … [Read more...]
‘They came in full force’ – Florida pastor gives thanks to Missouri Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers for hurricane response
BRISTOL, Fla. – Matt Basford pastors First Baptist Church here in this small town in the Florida panhandle, but he’s grown quite accustomed to seeing the church’s hallways filled with as many Missouri Baptists as local members these past two months. First Baptist was the headquarters for Missouri Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers bringing help, hope and healing after Hurricane Michael hammered the area in mid-October. “I grew up on the gulf coast and I’ve seen many storms,” Basford … [Read more...]
‘Come, let us adore Him’ – With live nativity Missouri Baptists call to mind the very first Christmas
JEFFERSON CITY – Visitors to the Dec. 1 Christmas open house at the Governor’s mansion were treated to holiday décor that held more meaning than mere garland and candy canes. Governor Mike Parson, a member of First Baptist, Bolivar, asked Concord Baptist Church here to stage a live nativity on the grounds. As crowds wound around waiting to see inside the historic residence, they first got a reminder of the true meaning of Christmas with live shepherds, wise men, and of course, Mary, Joseph … [Read more...]
Soli Deo gloria: Handel’s ‘Messiah’ lifts Christ high
COLUMBIA – On a cold, clear night in November, a crowd of 1,700 people gathered at Jesse Hall on the campus of the University of Missouri. They sat in rapt silence for nearly three hours as Scripture was unfolded, telling the story of Christ. It began with the prophecies of Isaiah, moved onto His birth in Luke, wound through His ministry and death in the Gospels, celebrated His resurrection with shouts of Hallelujah, and ended with selections from Revelation in anticipation of His second … [Read more...]
Reavis: Rededicate yourselves to God’s redemptive mission
SPRINGFIELD – With an animated and contagious energy, Herb Reavis brought a message on the miracle of spiritual awakening Oct. 23 during the Missouri Baptist Convention annual meeting here. The pastor of North Jacksonville Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Fla., preached out of the third chapter of the book of Jonah, explaining that if Christians, truly desire to see a spiritual awakening like took place in Nineveh, it will require three things: a rededication of God’s servants to the … [Read more...]
