LA PLATA – Just because public school teachers don’t wear their testimony on their sleeves doesn’t mean Christian educators stop being followers of Jesus when they set foot inside their classroom. Just ask Billy Pippin. Pippin teaches elementary special education in La Plata, in north-central Missouri. A 21-year veteran of the classroom, he is also an ordained minister of the gospel and a member of First Baptist, La Plata. He “lucked into teaching,” he says. His mom, aunt, and cousins all … [Read more...]
MBCH summer camp changes lives
Last month in this space, James Morrow, Vice President of the Missouri Baptist Children’s Home Foundation encouraged you to pray and provide funds to send an MBCH kid to our summer camp. We have just returned to our “normal” lives from this annual camp and I have the privilege of sharing how lives were changed because of your donations and prayers. The kids we serve have experienced deep levels of trauma throughout their lives. This has greatly affected how they perceive and respond to … [Read more...]
Judge blocks Missouri’s ban on abortions at 8 weeks
KANSAS CITY – Days before it was to take effect, a federal judge on Aug. 27 temporarily blocked a Missouri ban on abortion after eight weeks of pregnancy. U.S. District Judge Howard Sachs blocked the law for the time being, pending a legal challenge from Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union. The abortion provider and the ACLU filed their suit arguing that the Missouri Stands for the Unborn Act – also called the “heartbeat” law – is unconstitutional and goes against … [Read more...]
Review: ‘Overcomer’ a touching, funny film
I can be a bit of a movie snob. Because of this part of my identity, I sometimes go into a faith-based movie with low expectations. In my mind, I’m being charitable by giving the plucky, low-budget underdog a chance, when in reality I’m probably being more than a little condescending. Many so-called “Christian movies” have earned a little condescension, but movies like “Overcomer” mean that sometime soon I won’t have to automatically grade them on a curve. The latest movie from Alex and … [Read more...]
MBCH sees 4 saved, serves 868 families
SPRINGFIELD – Trustees for Missouri Baptist Children’s Home toured MBCH campuses in the Springfield area as they met here for their July 23 board meeting. “There’s some good things happening,” MBCH President Russell Martin said. “Not every case is a success, but we can plant some seeds and know they’re exposed to Gospel. We do our part, and God does His part.” Ministry to Families Trustees heard from MBCH Children and Family Ministries (CFM) of residential services provided thus far in … [Read more...]
South Haven, Belton offers friendly invitation, free chicken
BELTON – There’s a stereotype about Baptists and fried chicken, but if a stereotype builds relationships and gets people in the door, you might as well embrace it. South Haven Baptist Church here has been hosting what they call Drive-Thru Thursdays this summer, each time offering a different treat to anyone who will drive through their parking lot and ask. Some weeks they give away ice cream, other weeks it’s BBQ or burgers. But twice this summer, it’s been 200 chicken sandwiches donated … [Read more...]
A year after Hurricane Florence, Missourians still at work in NC
WALLACE, N.C. – It’s been nearly a year since Hurricane Florence left the North Carolina coast water-logged and battered, but the survivors of the storm are still in the process of getting their lives back to normal. And even though the initial headlines have faded, Missouri Baptists are still at work bringing help, hope and healing to their brothers and sisters 1,000 miles to the east. Union Hill Baptist Church, Holts Summit, sent four adults and four students to Wallace, N.C. in late … [Read more...]
Streamers break world record to ‘hype’ Jesus: Wentzville brothers broadcast 600+ hours in 30 days
WENTZVILLE – 662 hours, 7 minutes and 48 seconds. That how much time the Greenings spent in front of video games in the last 30 days. That’s more than 22 hours of every day. You may think you play a lot of video games, or perhaps know someone who spends just a little bit too much time in front of their PC or PlayStation, but you haven’t met the Greening Brothers. Make that, the World Record-Holding Greening Brothers. Joshua, 20, and Daniel, 17, are members of First Baptist, Wentzville. … [Read more...]
Church sees two salvations after Disaster Relief response
ST. CHARLES – God can use anything to build His Kingdom, and that includes swollen rivers and flooded homes. Michael Bowen, who came to Orchard Farm Baptist Church, here as pastor in March, was seeking ways to help get the church more involved in the community when the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers did the job for him. After the flooding, the church began hosting Friday night fellowships. More than 100 showed up for the first fellowship. “It lets people have a sense of normalcy since … [Read more...]
‘One giant leap for mankind’ – 50 years ago, astronauts saw God’s creation from new perspective
LUNAR SURFACE – It’s been called the greatest achievement in human history. On July 16, 1969, a mere 65 years after the Wright brothers first took to the air, Buzz Aldrin, Neal Armstrong and Michael Collins climbed atop a 362-foot-tall, 6.5 million-pound tower of flame and thunder. Thus began their 953,054-mile flight to the moon and back, all while using a navigational computer with less computing power than a modern washing machine. 50 years ago: Aldrin celebrated communion on moon
LUNAR SURFACE – Apollo 11’s lunar lander touched down on July 20, 1969. It was a Sunday. Mission protocol called for an hours-long wait before opening their hatch to the surface, so Buzz Aldrin opened his tiny pouch of personal items and retrieved a thimbleful of wine and some bread. Missed gospel opportunity 52 years ago ignited evangelistic passion in astronauts’ secretary
EDITOR’S NOTE: This updated story ran in its original form in the Jan. 17, 2015 issue of The Pathway. ST. LOUIS – Before Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins could blast off for their lunar landing and secure their places in history books, the tough lessons and sacrifice of Apollo 1 two years earlier paved the extraterrestrial road. Judy Boen was there. See related story: Aldrin celebrated communion on moon See related story: God, creation and the day men walked on the … [Read more...]
